This is a new course, aimed at school coaches who have a good understanding of the basics and are now seeking to improve their knowledge of the most modern dimensions of the game. The course will present both the technical skills which players require to implement contemporary strategies and the tactics that enhance team play. There will be a combination of practical work and video illustration to provide participants with skills, new practices and improved understanding of modern Hockey.
Technical Skills
- Developing the Aerial Ball from both prospective; playing it and receiving it.
- Effective delivery of the Reverse Stick Hit
- Penalty Corner Attacking Skills
- Creating a ‘flowing’ game
- The art of defending – who wins the ball and how
Tactical Considerations
- Different formations and why would you use them
- Key considerations of each position
- PC Attack Routines
- PC Defence Routines
- Different Pressing Systems and why you would implement them

Matt Taylor
Matt Taylor is the current head coach of Nottingham University, who won the BUCS championships in 2014-15, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24. He was previously head coach of Beeston HC in the Men’s Premier Division, winning three championships between 2010-2014. He has also helped developed 80+ junior players gain presentative honours for the National Age Squads as well as having coached 45+ senior Internationals. As a player Matt won seven Championship titles with Cannock HC.
