Mountain Leadership Qualifications and Climbing Awards

by ICE Education

The Mountain Training Boards are concluding a review of their highly respected walking awards; with agreed changes to be rolled out nationally in 2014. The revised set of walking qualifications will include 'Lowland Leader', the likely re-naming of the 'Walking Group Leader' and 'Mountain Leader' awards.

These developments include the launch of a new Mountain Training award for those working with walking groups on paths in rural countryside and forest - the Lowland Leader Award.
This award provides a convenient entry point to the Mountain Training schemes and is designed to cover basic outdoor leadership skills as a first rung on the awards ladder. The Lowland Leader Award includes an optional expedition skills module for those working with groups using campsites or undertaking backpacking trips, making a flexible award which meets the needs of many user groups. The expedition skills module is also available to those who have completed the Walking Group Leader Award.
There will also be some changes incorporated into the syllabus and guidance as the Walking Group Leader Award changes.
